Old Gift Cards

Clover POS devices are unable to scan old gift cards. An old gift card can be manually applied to a Clover order as a custom tender. Alternatively, the gift card can be re-issued as a Clover gift card and the balance can be transferred by issuing Store Credit.

Begin by finding the old gift card by its ID number on the old gift card database (printout). Then take note of its remaining balance and proceed below.

Pay with an old gift card

Take the difference between the old gift card balance and the order total to determine whether the balance covers the order in full or only part of it.

If the balance covers only part of the order

  1. On the payment screen, select Split Custom Amount → enter an amount equal to the old gift card balance

  2. Pay that amount with the Old Gift Card custom tender

    The Old Gift Card custom tender appears as a button on the payment screen, in the bottom half of the screen.

  3. Prompt the customer to pay for the remainder of the order with cash or credit

If the balance exceeds the order total

  1. Pay for the order in full with the Old Gift Card custom tender

  2. Calculate the remaining balance to transfer:

    Transfer Balance = Old Gift Card Balance - Order Total

Transfer the balance to a Clover gift card

Use this to transfer a balance from an old gift card to a Clover gift card.

  1. Open the Gift Cards app from the home screen → select Issue Store Credit from the main menu
  2. Select the amount of credit to load onto the card → tap Next
  3. Swipe the gift card → tap Pay
  4. On the payment screen, tap $0.00 Cash → tap Pay Cash

This loads the card with the balance at a 100% discount.
